Sofa FAQs
Are your sofas made to order?
Yes, we make our sofas to order from start to finish in a family-run 2nd generation workshop in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire. It's akin to the 'champagne' of sofa making. There is such a rich heritage of upholstery in this area and our sofas, chairs and ottomans are made using traditional techniques. We follow each sofa's journey through our workshop to quality check every aspect.
Sofa ingredients
Frames: kiln-dried Beech & Birch hardwood sourced from FSC-certified plantations. Glued (water-based) steel screwed and timber dowelled at the joints for longevity.
Springs: Steel serpentine sprung seat and back with steel furniture clips to hold in place. Silence corded wire is threaded between the springs, this connects the springs across the span of the seat to add support and strength, it also stops them from splitting to help prolong the lifespan.
Padding: we use jute and hessian binds at the arms for strength. We then wrap the timber frame with rubberised horsehair - made from natural latex and coir. We cover this with a wool safe barrier cloth which is inherently FR so no nasty chemicals.
Finishing: We wrap a calico layer over the top ready for the removable slipcover in your choice of fabric.
Cushions: We've tried them all, as standard we offer seat cushions with an Origins foam core which is wrapped with Quallofil blue fibre (made from recycled sea plastic) and a European duck feather layer.
Origins foam is derived from plant polyols and made with sustainable castor oil vs petrochemical.
If you would like to omit the duck feathers in our cushions that's easily done.
The back cushions are full Quallofil Blue fibre for the soft, supportive 'squish'.
We've developed our cushions with low-maintenance comfort in mind. Simply drop them on each end once a week or so to keep them looking tip top.
Are your sofas sustainable?
We're big believers in buy well, buy once. Crafted for longevity using traditional techniques, our frames are made from kiln-dried FSC beech and birch hardwood. The glue we use around our dowelled joints is water based and we add rubberised coconut horsehair instead of foam for the wadding.
Because our sofas have fully removable covers, we use a wool interliner underneath the cover. There is no need to use fire-treated fabrics and it means that changing the look whenever you want is easy with a new cover.
Our sofas have a lifetime workshop guarantee, they really are built to last.
Where can I try your sofas?
We'll come to you! We often do home visits with our sofas, so if you're interested in road testing for yourself please get in touch here and we'll arrange to come and see you.
How long do they take to make?
We aim to deliver your sofa within 6 - 8 weeks from receipt of fabric at the workshop. Please note that we close orders for pre-Christmas delivery at the end of September.
Do you make sofa beds?
Yes! Our Seren and Sonder styles can both be adapted to include a sofa-bed mechanism with pocket sprung or memory foam mattress. We build the mechanism into the base of our sofas so the seat height and depth proportions remain the same.
Is there a guarantee?
We offer a lifetime workshop guarantee on our sofas. If you suspect something doesn't feel right or have any questions please don't hesitate to let us know and we'll sort it out for you.
